Tazkiyyah (Purification of the Soul) Qiyam

Have you heard the idea that the "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts"? That's exactly how I would describe this qiyam! It was a combination of two efforts: one from the sister's side and one from the brother's side; and the result was phenomenal.

It started at a time right in between Asr and Maghrib (it would be more accurate to say it started after the speakers ran a test that made everyone in the mosque think there was an earthquake.....never a dull moment). Though the time was a little awkward (and some of the attendees had no idea exactly what was going on) when we got around to reflections, everyone had gotten into revive mode and took out their reflective side.

After that we played Jeopardy in the cafe in which the brothers decimated the sisters......well would have if the Jeopardy wasn’t filled with inaccuracies! Let's be honest Al-Qarawain is definitely older than Al-Azhar! And do you know of any Queen of Sheba other than Bilqis? ... all I'm saying is people have to get their facts straight. So after that fiasco we had dinner catered from the Common Word Café: subs of chicken and turkey that were so good some of us paid extra for more.

After that is was Maghrib time and we gathered for a brief talk from Sr. Nur. Following her advice, we had planned for Sh. Basyouny to come and give a lecture but by Allah's will he caught something and was too bedridden to come (may Allah heal him of all his ailments). So Br. Ahmed and Br. Hassan made up for it by inspiring us with amazing on the spot lectures. That was followed by Isha, a reminder from Sr. Julia, 4 rakat of extra prayer, a reminder by Br. Abdurahman, and free time.

From intelligence reports I'm told that the sisters locked themselves in a room and did some group bonding activities....what that entails I have no idea. As for the brothers: half were sleeping and the others were in the cafe stacking up on their caffeine so they wouldn't fall asleep when Fajr came around.

We got up an hour before Fajr, prayed 6 rakat and then witr, followed by Fajr and a khatira from Br. Munther. What happened after that I have no idea because I passed out on a neatly stacked set of pillows on the ground, but as people awoke from their comfy couches and carpets they made their way to the cafe once more, grabbed a cup of coffee, and left the sanctuary of the mosque to impart their new-found wisdom onto others.......or went to play soccer in Watertown with the Muslim Athletic League.

May Allah make every revive at least as inspiring and uplifting as this one. Ameen.
